auditory steady-state response thresholds in adults with conductive and mild to moderate sensorineural hearing loss

چکیده
conclusions the assr can accurately predict the degree and configuration of hearing loss and discriminate the normal hearing from mild or moderate hearing loss and mild from moderate hearing loss, except for 500 hz. the air-conducted assr could not define the type of hearing loss. results the assr accurately estimates the behavioral thresholds as well as flat and sloping configurations. there was no correlation between types of hearing loss and difference of behavioral and assr thresholds (p = 0.69). the difference between assr and behavioral thresholds decreased as severity of hearing loss increased. the 40, 35, 30, and 35 db could be considered as cutoffs between normal hearing and hearing loss for 500, 1000, 2000, and 4000 hz, respectively. patients and methods this clinical trial was performed in iran and included patients who were referred from ear, nose, and throat department. a total of 54 adults (27 with sensorineural hearing loss, 17 with conductive hearing losses, and 10 with normal hearing) were randomly chosen to participate in our study. the type and degree of hearing loss were determined through testing by otoscopy, tympanometry, acoustic reflex, and pure tone audiometry. then the assr was tested at carrier frequencies of 500, 1000, 2000, and 4000 hz. background the auditory steady state response (assr) provides a frequency-specific and automatic assessment of hearing sensitivity and is used in infants and difficult-to-test adults. objectives the aim of this study was to compare the assr thresholds among various types (normal, conductive, and sensorineural), degree (normal, mild, and moderate), and configuration (flat and sloping) of hearing sensitivity, and measuring the cutoff point between normal condition and hearing loss for different frequencies.

Auditory Steady-State Response Thresholds in Adults With Conductive and Mild to Moderate Sensorineural Hearing Loss
BACKGROUND The Auditory steady state response (ASSR) provides a frequency-specific and automatic assessment of hearing sensitivity and is used in infants and difficult-to-test adults. OBJECTIVES The aim of this study was to compare the ASSR thresholds among various types (normal, conductive, and sensorineural), degree (normal, mild, and moderate), and configuration (flat and sloping) of heari...
متن کاملValidation of multi-channel auditory steady-state response in adults with sensorineural hearing loss.
OBJECTIVE For various medico-legal and financial reasons, some patients may clinically demonstrate an exaggerated hearing loss that varies in degree, nature and laterality. The purpose of this study was to evaluate whether multi-channel auditory steady-state response measurement can be used as an objective test of auditory thresholds in adults with sensorineural hearing loss. STUDY DESIGN AND...
متن کاملInferred basilar-membrane response functions for listeners with mild to moderate sensorineural hearing loss.
Psychophysical estimates of cochlear function suggest that normal-hearing listeners exhibit a compressive basilar-membrane (BM) response. Listeners with moderate to severe sensorineural hearing loss may exhibit a linearized BM response along with reduced gain, suggesting the loss of an active cochlear mechanism. This study investigated how the BM response changes with increasing hearing loss by...
متن کاملChronic conductive hearing loss in adults: effects on the auditory brainstem response and masking-level difference.
OBJECTIVE To determine whether chronic conductive hearing loss in adults results in changes in the auditory brainstem response (ABR) similar to those observed in children with histories of otitis media with effusion. DESIGN Test of effect of unilateral conductive hearing loss on adult ABR using age-matched control group and subjects as their own controls. SUBJECTS Twelve adults with a histo...
متن کاملCochlear compression in listeners with moderate sensorineural hearing loss.
Psychophysical estimates of basilar membrane (BM) responses suggest that normal-hearing (NH) listeners exhibit constant compression for tones at the characteristic frequency (CF) across the CF range from 250 to 8000 Hz. The frequency region over which compression occurs is broadest for low CFs. This study investigates the extent that these results differ for three hearing-impaired (HI) listener...
متن کاملPseudoexfoliation Syndrome and Sensorineural Hearing Loss
Introduction: Pseudoexfoliation syndrome (PXS) occurs due to the deposition of extracellular fibrillar materials on the anterior chamber of the eye. This syndrome has been considered to be part of a systemic disease with the potential involvement of the inner ear called sensoroneural hearing loss (SNHL). In this study, we aimed on evaluating SNHL within PXS patients in Iran to compare them wi...
